Audio-Technica has launched its BP350ST MS (mid-side) microphones in two versions, launching a camera-mount (BP350ST-UL) and boundary/gooseneck mountable version (BP350ST-UB).
The microphone is designed for professional broadcast, ENG, and field recording applications, featuring independent line-cardioid and figure-of-eight elements configured in mid side arrangement with switch-selectable internal matrixing.
Users can choose between left-right stereo output (wide or narrow) and discreet mid-side signals for later manipulation, offering flexibility for audio post-production.
The mid-side operation of both microphones allows audio to retain its depth when stereo channels are combined into a mono track, enabling the placing of dialogue naturally into a mix. The design is also envisioned to reduce problems with stereo miking, such as time alignment and comb filtering.
The BP350ST-UB’s element is housed within the same body as Audio Technica’s ATM350a instrument microphone and can be mounted using two included mounting systems: a low-profile boundary housing and a five-in gooseneck with clip-on mount to enable capture of stereo sound. The variant can also be used with any ATM350a mounting system.
The snap on grille of the boundary housing allows access to the microphone, lodging securely into the boundary’s base plate. The back of the plate is magnetised for mounting on metal surfaces and includes four holes for screw mounting. Using the gooseneck and clip-on mount, the microphone can be quickly positioned in different positions for close range sound pickup.
The AT8491UC clip-on mount includes a ¼-in camera thread for use with a tripod or other device.
The camera-mount BP350ST-UL microphone features a 16cm interference tube to reject off-axis noise to focus on distant sounds. The microphone is designed to mount securely to video cameras or support rigs, delivering lifelike stereo sound capture in dynamic recording situations. The AT8547 power module can be mounted into a camera’s microphone mount or secured using third-party options.
Both models feature permanently attached cables terminating in TA5F connectors that plug into the power module. Each model ships with a 36cm TA5F to dual XLR3-M stereo cable for connection to any mic preamp with phantom power.
