Genelec empowers immersive storytelling at Port of Rotterdam
The Port of Rotterdam is home to a new visitor and exhibition centre, Portlantis, powered through Genelec Smart IP audio.

Opened in early 2025, this educational space welcomes visitors to journey into the port’s 100-year history, exploring its growth and where the future will take it.

Spanning five, multi-use spaces, the port called on systems integrator Ata Tech and project sound designer Danny Weijermans to specify a system. The team selected Genelec’s 4410 Smart IP loudspeakers to deliver sound across each floor.

Connected by a 22 metre tall atrium, Portlantis’ three exhibit levels feature their own individual displays for visitors to discover, with each floor designed to engage visitors with touch screens, motion sensors, games, interactive labs, AR and VR experiences.

Bringing all of this into one unified AV system was a key goal, streamlining the sound as visitors walk through each connected space.

More than 80 Genelec 4410 Smart IP loudspeakers over the three exhibit floors, delivering coverage, clarity and intelligibility in a complex and noisy space.

The building’s central atrium created its own unique challenge, with the sound from each individual exhibit needing to blend into one balanced, central soundscape. The placement of each speaker is optimised for directivity, while also designing a specific tempo across every level to create a complete sound in the central space.
