Panel manufacturers in aggressive 3D push
Panel manufacturers are aggressively pursuing an increase in 3D TV panel penetration according to research body, DisplaySearch.

According to the company’s latest quarterly large area TFT LCD shipment report, Advanced LED+3D, 3D LCD TV increases to 1.9 million units in the first quarter of 2011, representing a 104% jump from 2010 figures.

Thr growth represents a 3.9% penetration among all LCD TV panels shipped. However, manufacturers are pursuing further increasing, aiming to hit 16.8% penetration by the end of the year.

David Hsieh, vice president of the Greater China Market for DisplaySearch, said: “The addition of 3D is attractive to panel makers because the price premium can help them increase average selling prices.”

He also warned of challenges ahead including: “Inadequate 3D content, the presence of flicker or crosstalk that can cause dizziness, price, uncomfortable glasses, and confusion about different 3D technologies.”

In the first quarter of 2011 shutter glass type 3D TV panel shipments reached more than one million units, while pattern retarder type 3D TV panels followed closely behind with approximately 880,000 units shipped.

DisplaySearch analysts also believe the panel makers are reducing 3D price premiums, improve technology to bolster viewing experience and work on glasses development to stimulate demand.
