Modulo Pi media server drives immersive sanctuary at Wynn Hospital
Modulo Pi technology has been used to create an immersive, multi-denominational sanctuary at Wynn Hospital in Utica, New York, transforming a traditional chapel into a calm space for reflection and prayer.

The Bonnie Tamer Woods Sanctuary was designed by Ancora Productions, with AV support from MayCo, for Mohawk Valley Health System. The installation combines six Panasonic PT-RZ7L laser projectors with a Modulo Player Pro media server to create an almost 360-degree projection environment.

The project was designed to support patients, families and staff with a contemplative environment rather than a conventional high-impact immersive experience. Visual scenes are inspired by local religious and natural spaces, with subtle environmental audio used to support the atmosphere.

The room presented several technical challenges. Measuring around 80 sq m with 3m ceilings, the sanctuary is not a perfect circle, instead combining flat walls with rounded corners. With no accurate architectural drawings available, Ancora carried out a full manual survey before the projection study was completed in Modulo Kinetic Designer 2D+3D.

The study helped determine projector quantity, lens choices and placement, while also generating prepared PSD mapping files for the installation team. The final design delivers projection coverage across three full walls and around 75% of the fourth wall, where the entrance interrupts the surface.

To preserve the sanctuary’s atmosphere, the projectors were hidden in the ceiling behind architectural elements. A full-scale floor template was printed to position each lens accurately, with locations transferred vertically to the ceiling using laser measurements.

MayCo used a single Modulo Player Pro to feed the six projectors, with advanced warping used to adapt content to the curved and non-uniform surfaces. Final mapping adjustments were made on site to account for construction variations in the finished room.

Ancora created a series of immersive scenes using imagery inspired by local churches, synagogues and mosques, alongside nature-based environments. Subtle animated details, including candles, clouds and birds, were added to create movement without distracting from personal reflection.

The system is operated through a custom iPad interface created in Modulo Player, allowing hospital staff to select and launch scenes with a single touch. The sanctuary is now a permanent 24-hour space within Wynn Hospital.
