Phenomena Experience upgrades Barcelona cinema with Christie RGB laser projection
Barcelona cinema Phenomena Experience has installed a Christie CP4435-RGB 4K RGB pure laser projector as part of a wider renovation of its single-screen venue.

The upgrade covers the auditorium, projection booth, sound system, acoustics, seating, lobby and bar, while retaining the cinema’s capability to present 35mm and 70mm film alongside digital content.

At the centre of the projection upgrade is the Christie CP4435-RGB, which uses RealLaser illumination and CineLife+ electronics. The projector delivers up to 35,000 lumens and covers more than 95% of the Rec. 2020 colour gamut.

It also supports Christie VDR, a software-enabled technology designed to improve image performance while increasing projector efficiency and operational lifetime.

Phenomena founder and director Nacho Cerdà said the move from Xenon lamp projection to RGB pure laser had been carefully considered, particularly because a significant part of the venue’s audience works within the audiovisual industry.

The projector was recommended by integrator Kelonik, with colour accuracy, reliability and optical consistency among the requirements for the installation.

Phenomena is used not only for public screenings but also for test screenings, laboratory corrections, sound tests and other professional sessions.

“I was surprised by the outstanding contrast and exceptional focus we could achieve with its lenses,” said Cerdà. “We’ve also seen a significant reduction in speckle compared with previous models, and the speed of format changes is extremely useful for us, given how varied our programming is throughout the day.”

The cinema operates a 15m-wide by approximately 6.2m-high screen, with a projection distance of around 20m, requiring the system to maintain sufficient brightness and optical performance across the large image area.

Phenomena occupies Barcelona’s former Cine Nàpols and runs a programme spanning first-run releases, classic films, retrospectives and special screenings in both digital and film formats.

The venue was recognised with the 2025 Carlo Lizzani Europa Award for Best European Theatre during the Venice Film Festival.

The Christie installation will operate alongside Phenomena’s continued use of 35mm and 70mm projection as the cinema maintains support for both analogue and digital presentation formats.

The wider renovation is also intended to support the venue’s use for festivals, premieres, presentations and other special events.
