The “In Motion – Art & Football” exhibition at Dortmund’s German Football Museum deployed a Genelec loudspeaker system to create an immersive visitor experience.
Featuring 23 Epson UHD projectors to animate dynamic surfaces, accompanied by film, photography and sound, allowing visitors to move through three distinct zones.
German integrator SIGMA System Audio-Visual was tasked with delivering the complex AV design and installation of this system, boasting more than 10 years of experience with German Football Museum, with the client requiring a multi-layered audio system to support the large space and its numerous displays. SIGMA System Audio-Visual worked closely with LEM Studios and PBX Studios, who were responsible for the sound design and audio content production.
A powerful in-ceiling system was needed to provide full-range audio across the venue, but a more intimate sound was needed for immersive playback so that visitors can get ‘up close and personal’ with the sound.
25 Genelec 4430A IP loudspeakers were installed discreetly behind the two large lateral projection walls, each 17.5m by 26.5m. The 4430s are used to play individual audio elements, creating a spatialised mix where different speakers deliver different content depending on where visitors stand.
During one of the museum’s shows, classical waltz music fills the room via the ceiling system, while Genelecs play isolated instrument parts. Subtle sound effects, including footsteps, pencil sketches and raindrops are localised to match visuals in the space, creating a ‘walkable cinema’ which gives each visitors a unique listening experience.
Genelec’s Smart IP Manager software was used to meet the short deadline on this project, enabling the team to handle any filtering and adding latency to each loudspeaker.
