Computer chip shortage to last six months says Cisco
Cisco chief Chuck Robbins has said that the computer chip shortage sweeping the globe will last for most of 2021 due to lack of production capacity and the Covid-19 pandemic.

Speaking to the BBC, Robbins said: "We think we've got another six months to get through the short term.

"The providers are building out more capacity. And that'll get better and better over the next 12 to 18 months."

Semiconductors are essential for developments of 5G technology, IoT and AI, with shortages having a knock-on impact across the globe. Nations and organisations such as the EU are now increasingly looking inward to intensify local chip production within their territories.

The semiconductor supply chain issue has even worked its way to the agenda of US president Joe Biden, meeting with representatives of Intel, NXP, Samsung, Micron Technology and more with a promise of $50 billion USD in semiconductor manufacturing and research investment.
