BBC Studioworks installs INFiLED LED walls for National Lottery broadcast studio
BBC Studioworks has upgraded its Television Centre facility in London with new LED display infrastructure to support the live broadcast of National Lottery draws.

The installation centres on two 5m x 3m LED walls from INFiLED, forming a reconfigurable studio backdrop for broadcasts that air six nights a week across the UK.

The upgrade was driven by requirements from Allwyn, operator of The National Lottery in the UK, which sought a new broadcast home capable of delivering high reliability alongside visual flexibility. BBC Studioworks responded by developing a purpose-built studio environment designed to support multiple lottery formats within a single space.

Positioned at a 90-degree angle, the two DBmk2 Series displays allow the studio to shift between different visual identities at the push of a button. This enables production teams to adapt the environment for multiple games while maintaining a consistent broadcast workflow.

A key design consideration was ensuring that the visual system enhanced, rather than distracted from, the draw machine, which remains the focal point of each broadcast. This placed particular emphasis on image quality, contrast control and the avoidance of visual artefacts.

Managing moiré and camera interaction was critical. The specification of a 1.95mm pixel pitch, combined with depth-of-field control and optical filtering, ensures a clean image on camera even at close range. INFiLED’s colour and brightness stabilisation technology further supports consistent output across wide viewing angles.

Tim Wood, head of Television Centre at BBC Studioworks, said: “We had a tight deadline in transitioning Allwyn to their new home without disrupting their normal six-night-a-week output. We had to get it right and ensure everything ran smoothly from night one on this stage.”

BBC Studioworks selected the DBmk2 Series following in-house testing, assessing performance under its own camera conditions before final procurement. Wood added: “We chose the INFiLED DBmk2 Series because of its reliability and high resolution. We were really impressed with the quality of the product visually, electronically and mechanically.”

Designed for broadcast and virtual production environments, the DBmk2 Series features a fine pixel pitch and high contrast performance, supported by an ultra-black LED surface to maintain controlled black levels under studio lighting conditions.

The studio is now fully operational, delivering consistent output across its weekly broadcast schedule. Wood said: “We are well into having the studio up and running, and Allwyn UK, our client, couldn’t be happier.”
