The rediscovery of a brick-vaulted basement beneath Smithfield Market has led to a £350,000 tender for an immersive exhibition in the 800 sq m Victorian-era vaults.
The hidden space was rediscovered in 2019 during the early days of the market’s £437 million development, when a building contractor broke through a wall to find a rat-infested network of vaults below the streets of London.
The discovery forced the architect team to go back to drawing board and a number of options were considered for the vaults, including closing them.
The museum has put out a £350,000 tender to create an immersive exhibition in the 800 sq m Victorian-era vaults.
The exhibition aims to “bring to light never-before-seen archaeological treasures, blending physical collections with cutting-edge storytelling to create an engaging, multi-sensory experience”.
