Augmented reality display shipments are forecast to overtake virtual reality display shipments according to Omdia’s forecast for the XR near-eye display market.
AR display shipments are forecast to reach 21 million units by 2030, overtaking virtual reality display shipments at 19 million units.
Omdia highlighted that the AI and AR glasses market continues to face a fundamental trade off between battery life, weight, and device performance, with manufacturers struggling to optimise all three simultaneously.
The report indicates that the XR near-eye display market is undergoing a structural shift which could see the market share of VR displays fall from 72% in 2026 to 43% by 2032. Over the same period, the share of AR displays could rise from 28% in 2026 to 57% in 2032.
