AI developer upscales silent film from 1896 into 4K 60fps
An AI developer called Denis Shiryaev has upscaled a famous silent film from 1896 to 4K, bringing its frame rate up to 60fps, and has even added sound, using freely available software tools.

The original film - a 50-second silent short film called L'Arrivée d'un train en gare de La Ciotat - is part of movie folklore, legend has it when moviegoers first saw the film in 1896 they were so consumed by how realistic the train looked they leaped out of the way thinking the train would jump out of the screen.

Shiryaev used two widely available pieces of enhancement software, DAIN and Topaz Labs' Gigapixel AI, to update the footage into a 4K 60fps clip.

Gigapixel AI uses a proprietary interpolation algorithm which analyses the image and recognises details and structures and 'completes' the image.

Topaz uses AI to accurately sharpen and clarify images even after they've been enlarged by as much as 600%.

DAIN then inserts frames between the keyframes of an existing video clip.
