Absen has completed the first UK deployments of its XL1.5 LED technology across a series of retail destinations, including Metrocentre, Eldon Square and Manchester Arndale.
Delivered in partnership with EcoVista and retail media owner Limited Space, the rollout forms part of an upgrade to the Orbit retail media network, replacing a mix of legacy LCD video walls and earlier LED installations.
The project centred on improving image quality, durability and operational resilience while minimising disruption within live retail environments. Installations were completed overnight to avoid interrupting trading hours or advertising schedules, with existing structures retained wherever possible.

Absen’s XL1.5 COB (Chip-on-Board) LED was selected for the upgrade, marking the first regional deployment of the series in the UK. The displays use a 1.5mm pixel pitch to deliver high-resolution imagery suited to close viewing distances in busy shopping environments.
COB technology embeds LED chips directly onto the substrate beneath a protective layer, improving durability and reducing vulnerability to impact or wear. This was particularly relevant for the Orbit network, where many screens are positioned at low level within public-facing circulation areas.

The upgraded displays measure approximately 3m by 2m and retain interactive capabilities through touch support integrated into the LED surface. To support long-term operation, the rollout also included a new control system designed to improve playback reliability and system stability.
Rather than replacing the full infrastructure, bespoke aluminium mounting systems were developed to adapt existing frameworks, reducing material usage and accelerating deployment.

David Neale, managing partner at EcoVista, said: “For this type of retail environment, you need technology that can genuinely stand up to everyday use while still looking exceptional. Absen’s COB solution gives us that balance.”
Matt Carroll, co-managing director at Limited Space, said the upgrade was intended to strengthen the long-term resilience of the company’s retail media estate while improving visual impact for advertisers.

The project highlights the growing adoption of COB LED technology within retail media environments, where durability, fine pixel pitch and operational reliability are becoming increasingly important alongside visual performance.
