Landline telephone technology in the UK is to be permanently switched off in 2025, replaced with voice over IP (VOIP) technology in professional and consumer environments.
UK phone and internet network manager, Openreach, has already begun the switchover away from copper cable telephone network to VOIP connections, with hundreds of trials across the UK to take place throughout 2021 and 2022.
Once the switchover takes place, phone calls via landline will not be able to take place without an internet connection.
Landline telephones have largely fallen out of favour across the world, with its usage declining year on year throughout the world.
In the European Union, Statitsa states that 32% of the population surveyed never used landlines in 2015, and this number is likely to have increased in the intervening years.
