Theatre integration for Palestinian charity

Nine years after the Palestinian NGO, PRCS, built the Ramallah Theatre it’s ready for action. Anna Mitchell speaks with integrator INTE to find out how the project was finally delivered and why it took to long to realise.

In 2004 the Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS), an NGO in the West Bank, built a theatre in its headquarters in Ramallah. The idea was to provide the area with a cultural resource but the reality of delivering specialist AV systems for the theatre was much tougher than PRCS, part of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent movement, anticipated.

Partly due to cost and partly due to expertise there was a huge delay in finishing the Ramallah theatre.

It wasn’t until 2013 when things got moving and the NGO, which provides medical aid and health assistance, partnered with Jordanian integrator, International New Technical Est. (INTE), and work commenced on fitting the theatre with AV systems.

One of the major challenges was in finding local skilled engineers to install and configure the AV equipment. And INTE had a problem in getting skilled labour into the area too.

Sami Nazzal, project manager at INTE who headed up the installation team, explains: “The market in Palestine is very small so finding skilled people and professional technicians was a challenge. There are skilled engineers but not in the AV field. Somebody with a background in electronics does not necessarily know how to install a sound or media system. You need experience of doing it and with few projects in the area that is hard to gain.”
