Facebook has launched Horizon Workrooms, a new free Facebook app that allows remote colleagues to work together in a virtual reality meeting space.
Last week the social media company opened the beta version of the app, available for free download on Oculus Quest 2.
The app works across virtual reality and the web and uses features like mixed-reality desk and keyboard tracking, hand tracking, remote desktop streaming, videoconferencing integration, spatial audio, and the new Oculus Avatars.
Workrooms creates a virtual meeting space that colleagues can join in VR as an avatar or dial in from a computer by video call.
Facebook describes Workrooms as a mixed reality experience, “letting you bring your physical desk and compatible tracked keyboard into the virtual room with you, where you can see them sitting on the virtual meeting table in front of you.”
It uses the Oculus Remote Desktop companion app for Mac and Windows to provide easy access to personal computers via VR for note taking, file access and screen sharing.
Spatial audio and advanced avatars are designed to make interaction expressive and natural. Each workroom also offers unlimited whiteboard space that remain in the room for as long as desired and can be exported out of VR when required.
Users can configure the room to suit the task they’re working on, changing the size or seating layout as required.
For those that can’t or don’t want to join in VR meeting links can be share and video participants show up on a video screen in the virtual room. Workrooms supports 16 people in VR and up to 50 total on a call.
