A new Android and iOS app has been created by Amsterdam-based design studio CapitolaVR which creates an AR portal to take users on a journey through the creation of one of Rembrandt’s most famous paintings.
The app was created for Dutch insurance and investment company Nationale Nederlanden and the Mauritshuis museum, where the painting is currently on display.
The app depicts the 1632 painting entitled 'The Anatomy Lesson of Dr Nicolaes Tulp', and uses lookalikes for a 3D recreation of the scene.
Developers used ARkit from Apple and ARcore from Google to create the portal.
"We 'polished' the captured mesh to make them look as much as possible as the characters in the painting,” said Capitola’s David Robustelli.
A video posted above shows how the app takes people inside the painting through an arch you can place in your current environment.
