Al-Aziz Al-Hakim Mosque in Moqattam, Cairo, has completed an AV installation based around JBL Professional loudspeakers, Crown amplifiers, Soundcraft mixers and BSS signal processing.
Delivered by Audio Technology, Harman Professional’s distributor in Egypt, the system is designed to support daily prayers, Friday sermons, religious events, community gatherings and broadcast applications.
The mosque required an audio system that could provide consistent speech intelligibility across a large worship space while remaining discreet within the building’s architecture. Long reverberation times caused by stone and marble surfaces added to the acoustic challenge, while the interior design limited loudspeaker placement.
Audio Technology designed the main prayer hall system around JBL Professional CBT Series column loudspeakers. Using Constant Beamwidth Technology, the loudspeakers direct sound towards the congregation while reducing reflections from walls and ceilings.
Outdoor areas are covered by JBL Professional AWC Series all-weather loudspeakers, replacing conventional horn loudspeakers commonly used in similar installations.
The system also includes Soundcraft digital mixing consoles for operator control across daily worship, religious events and live productions. Crown XLS and Crown CDi DriveCore Series amplifiers power the system, while BSS Soundweb BLU-100 signal processors and EC-8BV wall controllers provide centralised management.
The networked architecture supports signal routing, time alignment between indoor and outdoor zones, preset management and day-to-day operation by mosque staff.
Nermeen Iskander, marketing director for Audio Technology, said: “The project was unique because it combined a complete Harman ecosystem across professional audio, broadcast infrastructure and security systems while respecting the architectural identity of the mosque.”
Iskander added: “The JBL CBT loudspeakers provided uniform coverage and speech intelligibility required for the main prayer hall, while the JBL AWC loudspeakers delivered natural sound outdoors. Combined with Soundcraft mixers, Crown amplifiers and the BSS processing platform, the system gives operators the flexibility to manage different worship and community events from a centralized network.”
The installation allows operators to switch system configurations for different event types, while time alignment between indoor and outdoor loudspeakers is designed to prevent distracting echoes and overlapping coverage.
The integrated platform also supports live broadcasts of major religious events and provides scope for future expansion.
According to Audio Technology, mosque leadership and worshippers have reported improvements in speech intelligibility and overall system performance, particularly during multilingual events and larger religious gatherings.
The company also reported positive feedback on the system’s operational simplicity and reliability for everyday use.
