Sony is installing a Crystal LED screen stretching across two floors of the Shiseido Innovation Centre in Yokohama, Japan, according to a BBC report.
Sony unveiled plans for the bus-sized 19.2m x 5.4m screen at NAB 2019, with the screen large enough to stretch between the first and second floors of the Shiseido Innovation Centre.
Sony’s 16K display contains 16 times as many pixels as a 4K television, with the installation being comprised of multiple modular panels without bezels, allowing the screens to fit together to create the impression of a single screen.
16K footage is hard to come by, with a very limited amount having been shot. As a result, Sony produced its own 16K film for the centre, displaying footage of life size animals.
The 16K resolution allows the eyes to perceive depth in the content, creating a pseudo ‘virtual reality’ experience.
Sony has unveiled several versions of its Crystal LED screens in the past in different resolutions, showcasing an 8Kx4K display at ISE 2019.
The company has also worked on a 16K display in the past, building a 36 screen 16Kx2K display at Haneda Airport, Japan in 2014.
The first and second floors of the Shiseido Innovation Centre are set to open to the public on 13 April 2019.
