Micro LED market to surge to 34.6 million units by 2031 says Omdia research
Research from Omdia forecasts that shipments of micro LED displays will reach 34.6 million units by 2031, accounting for 0.9% of the total display market.

The small percentage of total market share is attributed by Omdia to the technology remaining competitive due to the technology’s use in select applications over the forecast period.

Omdia forecasts that shipments in the micro LED display market will reach 1.7 million by 2027, driven largely by LED on-silicon backplane (LEDos) in ultra-small sized display devices such as XR devices and smart-glasses for outdoor environments.

By 2031, XR devices are expected to account for 24.4% of the micro LED display market. The research also highlighted that display manufacturers in 2024 primarily produced new micro LED display prototypes that targeted automotive, public displays, and virtual studios, a trend which Omdia suggests that suppliers are anticipating greater adoption of micro LED displays in niche applications.

Jerry Kang, senior research manager, Omdia, commented: “Due to the low cost competitiveness, many display suppliers are focusing on penetrating product segments where OLED or LCD struggle to meet customer demands for specific display sizes and performance.

“Simultaneously, several component and equipment suppliers are proactively introducing advanced technologies to enhance the manufacturing of micro LED displays.”
