K-array elevates Alpine audio for bei Tomschy restaurant
The Restaurant Hochkitzbühel bei Tomschy is home to a K-array audio system, blending panoramic dining with a high-energy atmosphere.

The Alpine restaurant welcomes guests for relaxed meals by day, but at weekends becomes a DJ-led social hub for crowds from across the region. Balancing two polar-opposite atmospheres, as well as its sensitive Alpine setting with neighbouring lodges, which created a complex audio challenge to balance sound quality with strict control over noise dispersion.

Owner, Christoph Tomschy, required a system that could transition between background music and full-scale DJ performances without compromising on clarity or breaching local sound regulations. Tomschy worked with integrator, LiveWire, where a K-array system was offered to ensure that the venue could operate across both indoor and outdoor environments.

Inside the main lounge, the design had to contend with acoustically reflective materials including wood flooring and glass partitions, while achieving consistent coverage and musical clarity. To achieve this, multiple Python KP52 line array loudspeakers were specified, using controlled vertical dispersion to reduce unwanted reflections and maintain intelligibility at high levels.

This allows the space to function equally well as a relaxed dining area and a high energy DJ environment, with additional Dragon KX12 loudspeakers positioned near the DJ booth to provide the necessary headroom and impact for live performances. A combination of Thunder KS1 and KS3 subwoofers were used to deliver low frequency reinforcement, focussing energy where it is needed without overwhelming the room.

Dedicated monitoring in this space also allows DJs to perform comfortably without excessive stage volume, reinforcing the system’s balance between performance and control.

The outdoor terrace features sweeping views across the Alpine landscape and presented an even bigger challenge due to environmental conditions and strict local noise limitations. Python KP102 column loudspeakers were selected to deliver controlled horizontal coverage with narrow vertical dispersion, directing sound towards the terrace while minimising spill into the surrounding environment. Rumble KU315 subwoofers are positioned to reinforce bass within the venue boundary, reducing low frequency propagation beyond it. This allows for an engaging soundscape without excessive volume levels.

To combat the effects of Alpine conditions of snow, wind, UV exposure, and rapid temperature fluctuations, K-array’s marine-grade treatment was used to ensure long-term reliability.

For control and processing, a Kommander KA68 amplifier is used with integrated DSP, allowing the system to be tuned precisely across all zones, including crossover management, delay alignment, and level control.

A Q-SYS platform provides intuitive operation which allows staff to switch between different usage scenarios such as daytime dining, ski gatherings, and DJ events.

Tomschy commented: “bei Tomschy is a truly special place where at 1,700 meters above sea level, we offer guests an experience like no other. During the day, people dine and take in the breathtaking views over the stunning Alpine peaks, then by night the DJ takes the stage and the whole place comes alive. The K-array system is at the heart of it all, giving us the precise and powerful audio we wanted while still respecting the beautiful environment we are so proud to be part of.”
