The Dundee Repertory Theatre has introduced an exclusive foyer section where visitors can experience a VR version of a theatrical performance through an innovative headset design.
The theatre’s experience, a performance of the play, Smile, centres around the life of football manager Jim McLean, and puts onlookers at the heart of the manager’s expletive-laden, dressing room rant.
The sequence was developed by Box Office VR, designed for people who may not typically attend theatre performances or those who cannot physically reach the venue.
The VR system was creating using Google Cardboard VR glasses, requiring theatre-goers to insert their phones into VR device before strapping the box around their head and plugging in headphones.
An on-board app then streams a recorded performance to the phone, offering the viewer a 180-degree view of the stage and auditorium.
