37 kilograms of heroin and nearly 1.6 tonnes of crystal meth were seized by Australian officials last month at the Melbourne waterfront, hidden in stereo speakers shipped from Bankok, Thailand.
According to Australian police, the seized drugs haul had an estimated street value of 1.2 billion Australian dollars (739,000000 million Euros).
Officers found the illicit cargo after selection a sea cargo consignment for inspection, with an x-ray revealing anomalies within the speakers, with border force officers discovering the vacuum-sealed packages containing the drugs after deconstructing the speakers.
No arrests have yet been made as the Australian Border Force and Federal Police continue investigations.
Peter Bodel, Australian federal police acting commander, organised crime, said ““The effect of these drugs on the community and families would have been profound. It may be your loved one, a friend or neighbour who has been spared the terrifying impact of this mammoth shipment.”
