European broadband speeds outpace UK broadband

The average UK download speed of 51.48 Mbps, an improvement on 2020’s speed of 37.82Mbps, but finds itself lagging behind the average western European speed of 90.56 Mbps.

Nine countries and territories in western Europe lag behind the UK, with Ireland, Switzerland, Denmark, San Marino, Austria, Italy, Guernsey and the Faroe Islands, with UK territory Jersey taking the crown for fasted internet in the world with an astounding average speed of 274.27 Mbps, the first territory in the world to make pure fibre (FTTP) available to every broadband user on the island.

By contrast, the UK Office of Communications (Ofcom) reports that the UK mainland’s FTTP coverage at 21%.

Other fastest territories globally include Liechtenstein (2), Iceland (3) and Andorra (4), with western Europe topping the region tables for the fastest broadband globally.
