Mitsubishi Electric has installed a six-metre diameter globe, constructed from its OLED tiles, in the National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation in Japan.
The globe hangs 18 metres above the floor and consists of an aluminium sphere covered with 10,362 OLED tiles. It will display scenes of the earth taken by a meteorological statellite.
The 10 megapixel resolution display replaces a previous globe made from LEDs and exceeds the resolution of that device by a factor of 10.
It all forms part of the Maraikan Museum’s Tsunagari project, designed to visualise the earth in various forms. The globe itself is known as the Geo-Cosmos. Surrounding it in the exhibition space are interactive tables forming the Geo-Scope element of the exhibition. These allow visitors to explore various aspects of the earth’s climate and environment.
