Engineers at LG are using AI to reduce the dizziness and motion sickness experienced by some VR users, according to Business Korea.
LG subsidiary LG Display partnered with Sogang University in Korea to develop technology that reduces motion-to-photon-latency and motion blur, two causes of nausea for VR users.
The central piece of this breakthrough is an algorithm that can generate very high resolution images from low resolution ones in real time. Deep learning (AI) technology makes this conversion possible without using external memory devices.
The new technology boosts power efficiency and optimises the algorithm, resulting in high resolutions on smartphones/tablets. It reduces motion to photon latency and motion blurs to one-fifth or less of the current level by cutting system loads when operating displays for VR.
In addition, LG Display and Sogang University have agreed to develop an instrument to measure the motion to photon latency and motion blurs of VR devices by applying a platform loaded with a precision motor that can simulate human neck movements and an optical system based on the human visual system through this industry-academy cooperation.
