To promote its new 2017 IS saloon vehicle, Japanese manufacturer Lexus has created a concept car covered in 41,999 programmable LEDs. When fully illuminated the car is capable of producing 175,000 lumens.
The LEDs in the LIT IS can change in response to human gestures and music, and it has three modes of interaction; Attract, Music and Gesture.
Attract mode features a loop of colourful graphics that highlight the design of the car.
Music Viz mode is designed to respond to music, as the LEDs will create custom, responsive displays that sync to any song.
Gesture mode allows the motion of the LED animations to be controlled by users’ hand movements with the help of a gaming console. This mode directly connects the car and the driver, allowing the person to send a signal and see the car respond.
Each one of the 41,999 lights had to be applied by hand, which if placed end-to-end, would stretch half a mile (800 metres) in length.
