Not content with touch and gesture interaction, a student at the Art Centre College of Design in California has developed a way to let you reach inside a screen and even interact with a remote user. Portal boxes, the brainchild of Jayne Vidheecharoen, consist of a webcam, monitor and green screen and appear as a display unit with a hole in the side.
By reaching into the screen a user can interact with the display being shown and introduce physical objects to the display. By adding an internet connection to the Portal box, Vidheecharoen has created a system that allows remote participants to interact with each other in the display.
Vidheecharoen has successfully raised money for the project through funding platform Kickstarter. Project creators pitch their ideas on the Kickstarter website and set a funding goal. Site visitors can pledge money to projects they believe in and if a funding goal is reached the money is transferred to the creator.
