Fraunhofer IIS has announced that its Full-HD Voice codec, AAC-ELD, will be avilable to application developers and service providers wishing to create VoIP applications with high quality audio.
The codec has been supported natively on iOS and Android for some time, but will now be made available to the wider market.
VoIP applications typically offer 3.4 kHz bandwidth, similar to legacy telephone systems, whilst some more recent offerings have reached 7 kHz. This is still far below the 20 kHz range of human hearing.
The AAC-ELD codec now offers this full 20 kHz of bandwidth, meaning that voice, background noise and music can all be treated equally in IP streamed audio settings.
