AVI-SPL transforms Heriot-Watt University Dubai campus with scalable AV

Heriot-Watt University (HWU) in Dubai partnered with AVI-SPL to design and deliver an ambitious AV installation across its 20,000 sq m, seven-storey facility.

The goal? To create a connected, flexible, and future-proof learning environment for students and faculty, supporting a range of teaching and collaboration styles.

From vision to reality

Tasked with deploying modern AV solutions across classrooms, huddle areas, labs, and meeting spaces, AVI-SPL stood out in a competitive tender process with a proposal that balanced cutting-edge technology, scalability, and intuitive design. The solution needed to integrate seamlessly with existing IT and security systems while delivering an exceptional user experience.

The result was a robust and adaptable AV ecosystem spanning:

40 classrooms with flexible setups to support independent use or room combining, tailored for diverse teaching formats.

15 meeting rooms featuring Crestron control systems, Neat video bars, and Crestron AirMedia for wireless sharing.

10 study rooms and 10 huddle spaces, offering intuitive, self-service collaborative environments with wireless connectivity.

4 teaching studios with broadcasting capabilities to support hybrid and remote instruction.

2 collaborative lecture teaching rooms designed as interactive learning hubs for up to 90 participants.

3 technical teaching labs and 2 PC-based labs, where AV technology supports practical, hands-on education.

A town hall venue with Samsung high-resolution displays and powerful sound systems to support events and large meetings.

A 13.5m x 1.5m Samsung LED wall at the entrance, making a striking first impression and serving as a digital signage platform.

To support this vast infrastructure, AVI-SPL deployed a suite of technologies from AV brands, including Epson projection for clarity in large-format teaching spaces, Crestron systems for unified control, Middle Atlantic Products for AV racking and infrastructure, Samsung display technology, Neat for video collaboration, and Wolfvision systems for visualisers and content sharing in teaching environments.

Managing complexity

The project demanded seamless coordination between contractors, packages, and technology systems. Some AV elements were dependent on external fit-out packages, requiring proactive planning. AVI-SPL mitigated potential issues with detailed documentation, early engagement with all stakeholders, and close on-site collaboration.

An intuitive control system anchored the user experience. Touch panels powered by Crestron enabled effortless operation across different room types and use cases, reducing friction and increasing technology adoption among staff.

Real results, ongoing support

The integration has transformed HWU’s Dubai campus into a model for digitally enabled education. Faculty and students now benefit from interactive, adaptable spaces that support active learning and collaboration. The project also includes an embedded, on-site AVI-SPL technician to ensure smooth day-to-day operations and quick resolution of any issues.

Anas Abu-Ghoush, head of information services at HWU, said: “AVI-SPL’s expertise and professionalism were evident from day one. Their team collaborated closely with us to design and implement tailored audio-visual solutions that transformed our classrooms and meeting spaces into dynamic, interactive environments. The team delivered seamlessly and have provided invaluable ongoing support, making them our trusted partner as we plan our future campus expansion.”

Partnership

The success of the initial rollout has laid the foundation for a lasting relationship. HWU has already engaged AVI-SPL to design AV systems for its upcoming 2025 campus extension.

Ahmed Habib, business development manager at AVI-SPL, said: “This project is an example of how we transform visions into reality. By combining cutting-edge technology with a deep understanding of our clients’ needs, we create environments that inspire learning, collaboration, and growth.”
