LG partners with research institute to break 6G transmission record

LG Electronics and Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft have transmitted data using 6G over 100m in an outdoor setting, smashing Samsung’s previous milestone of 15m.

The transmission and reception of wireless 6G terahertz (THz) data was achieved on August 13 with the data traveling between Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute (HHI) and the Berlin Institute of Technology in Germany.

Researchers say the success was down to a power amplifier developed by LG, Fraunhofer HHI and Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Solid State Physics (IAF) that combatted the power loss that happens between antennas due to the short range of 6G signals.

Global standardisation of 6G is targeted for 2025 and commercialisation should come within four years after. It is hoped it will bring faster wireless transmission and communication speeds with low-latency and high-reliability and should form a cornerstone of the IoT.

Dr. I.P. Park, president and CTO of LG Electronics, said: “The success of this test demonstrates that we are ever closer to the successful application of terahertz radio communication spectrum in the upcoming 6G era.
