A city built across an active fault line needs to be well prepared for seismic events. In anticipation Istanbul has opened two emergency command and control centres; Anna Mitchell explores the Hasdal centre with integrator Atempo.
Istanbul is located on the North Anatolian fault line and must ensure it is well prepared for emergencies. But ensuring the safety of 14 million residents living at risk of earthquakes is a serious business and authorities in the city recently invested in two major command and control centres either side of the city’s Bosphorus river.
The Hasdal Disaster and Emergency Directorate Command and Control Centre is located on the European side of the city and works to further the institutional and technical capacity of emergency management teams and their related institutions.
It is also tasked with raising public awareness of how to respond to and prepare for emergencies as well as study the risk to public buildings during an earthquake, including assessments of retrofitting or reconstruction of Istanbul’s buildings. Inventory and risk assessment of cultural heritage buildings is also managed from the centre.
Turkish integrator Atempo was drafted in to install AV equipment throughout the entire facility which includes a Strategic Management Room, Command and Control Centre Room and a number of offices and meeting rooms.
