Hospital uses Haivision to benefit residents
The Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston is utilising a Haivision Furnace IP video distribution system with Makito HD H.264 encoding technology for real time remote viewing and recording of its surgical simulation lab procedures.
Clinicians can now view simulated surgical procedures and clinical workflows in high-definition (HD) from within conference rooms, at any desktop, and even at home. Surgical residents benefit directly by being able to watch other students remotely and by reviewing cases after they are recorded.
"The system has given our users the video access they need to help educate healthcare providers," said Steve Poole, IT/AV manager and simulation specialist at Brigham and Women's Hospital. "We installed the Furnace over two years ago and have recently upgraded to HD by simply adding Haivision's Makito HD encoder."
Haivision's Furnace system integrates seamlessly into the Simulation Lab's video routing system. In the Lab several HD video sources are routed to a display that shows a quad view of two overhead cameras for surgical views, the endoscopic camera for minimally invasive procedures and the patient vital signs for anaesthesiology monitoring. The quad view is routed to a Makito HD H.264 encoder and then distributed and recorded by the secure Furnace IP video system. For live remote viewing of the Simulation Lab a Haivision Stingray™ set-top box is placed in a conference room where it decodes the HD video stream from the Makito. Haivision InStream viewing technology allows live video or video on demand review on any desktop.
The Haivision Furnace system provides for the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) compliance within healthcare, adding encryption to the video stream and providing 100 percent security. Live and on-demand video is only made available to authenticated users with detailed audit reports readily available.
