Intel backs WiGig for future 'without wires'

Intel demonstrated multigigabit wireless docking technology, which offers speeds of up to 7Gbps, when it presented its work with the WiGig standard at the Intel Developer Forum 2012 in San Francisco.
In his keynote speech, Justin Rattner, CTO of Intel, said: "In the future, if it computes, it connects. From the simplest embedded sensors to the most advanced cloud datacenters, we're looking at techniques to allow all of them to connect without wires."
He went on to describe the WiGig standard that operates over the unlicensed 60GHz frequency band and can wirelessly transmit AV data from sources to displays and speakers.
Rattner said: "I look forward to the day when docking my Ultrabook or tablet will not even need to be a conscious exercise – it will be as simple as dropping the device anywhere on my desk and having it automatically connect to a display and peripherals, no wires attached."
