IBC 2012 makes hay with 4K

The organisers of IBC 2012 say that the show has again set an attendance record, with a total count including exhibitors, visitors and conference delegates of 50,937.

The show also continued to expand space-wise, adding a 14th hall. On the technology front, and of interest to the AV fraternity there was a strong emphasis on 4k resolution from display and processing vendors. Particularly impressive was Sony’s live feed of 4K footage onto its 84" display. NHK was present in the Future Zone showing off it’s developments in Super Hi-Vision.
As part of my visit I was able to attend the IBC Big Screen showing of Hugo 3D. It was the first ever showing of a full-length 3D movie using laser projection. Christie provided its prototype laser projection system, which was paired with an XPAND 3D system to show 3D content at the same brightness as 2D is shown as.
Typically 3D presentations in cinemas are shown at around 3 foot lamberts, whilst the DCI specification for 2D is 14 foot lamberts. To demonstrate the difference, before the showing was a presentation of short clips from Transformers 3D and Puss in boots both shown first at 3 foot lamberts before being shown at 14 foot lamberts. The difference was staggering, It’s just a shame that the viewing public is likely to have to wait at least 5 years for the technology to be widely adopted in screens.
